HISTORY

The borough of Bury is made up of six towns. Consisting of Bury, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Radcliffe, Whitefield and Prestwich. Each borough having its own distinctive character, but still forming an intregal part of the Greater Manchester area.

Bury is the heart of the borough and boasts of a wide range of shopping facilities focused on and around the Millgate centre.

The entrance to the Mill Gate Centre

Opposite the main entrance to the Millgate centre is Kay Gardens which is a constant reminder of the boroughs past with its memorial to John Kay, inventor of the flying shuttle.

The Two Tubs

Proberly the oldest building in Bury is the Two Tubs.

It was built in the early 18th century which was then called the globe, and it was discovered in 1949 that the Two Tubs had been built around two giant oak tree’s from the time of Charles II.

Sir Robert Peel

The memorials in the town along with that of John Kay include the statue of Sir Robert Peel erected in 1852, the Whitehead clock Tower dated 1914 and the war memorials.

Bury Metrolink

Although railways have always played an important part in the borough’s history and Bury centre is proud to hold two stations within its constituent.

Bury Metrolink was built in 1980, and Bolton Street is the southern terminus of the east Lancashire railway.

The boroughs coat of arms contain appearances and symbols from all six of the towns. From Bury’s crest, the bee represents industry and the papyrus plant represents paper making. The rams head and the bullocks head come from the crest of both Tottington and Ramsbottom. Meanwhile the principle colour silver should be taken as a reference to Whitefield. Finally the crests of Radcliffe and Prestwich represent two old established families. They are wearing mural crowns, one wears a red rose, which is a symbol for Lancashire and the other wears a cogwheel, a symbol for industry.
